The Ingram Barge Co. agreed to the out-of-court settlement Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Covington.

Attorneys for the injured man, Christopher Eldridge, said the out-of-court settlement is one of the largest ever paid to an injured barge worker.

Mr. Eldridge, 24, was severely injured in 1999 when a cable snapped and struck him in the head.

His lawyer, Dennis O'Bryan, said Mr. Eldridge will require attendant medical care the rest of his life.

A spokesman for the Nashville-based company said the settlement will help Mr. Eldridge and his family with the cost of his care.

We have always felt for Mr. Eldridge and his family,” said company spokesman Keel Hunt. "We certainly wish him and his family well."
